In our centre, we have one classroom facilitated for the ASD Classes both the morning and afternoon ASD sessions.
As a team and with the help of our BCBA’s, we develop ‘Individual Educational Plans’ (IEPs) for every student in our classes. Following and coinciding with the academic curriculum, we also develop monthly lesson plans for every classroom. Each student in their IEP has a unique set of ‘Short-term Goals’ and ‘Long-term Goals’ suited to the child’s own specific needs. Our lesson plans are suited and adapted to the abilities of each individual class, which include various group activities, arts and crafts and activities such as sensory play, story-telling, etc.
Each student is observed through various assessments when they start, this is to help us develop each child’s ‘Individual Educational Plans’ (IEPs) as well as ‘Behaviour Support Plans’ if needed. Pairing with the child is an important step as building this trust and bond will lead to a positive/happy environment for the child to learn into the best of their ability. Curriculum assessments are carried out for the first week of the child settling in. This is key to observe the skills the child already knows and what areas need to be worked with.
Other key observations we would use are called ‘preference assessments’ this is a key where we as teachers observe and take note of items/toys/edibles that the child really enjoys that we could then use as a motivator for work.
These observations help in keeping track of the child’s progress so that their IEPs can be modified and developed further to provide the student with the best learning experience possible. In addition to the child’s academic learning, different extra-curricular activities are carried out throughout the year to develop social relationships in places they may not already be familiar with and to encourage interaction with peers.
In our Centre, the learning of our children is one of the most important objectives. We achieve this through elements of play and fun interactive engagement that involve all of the children. We ensure activities are very much child-led, allow them to explore all materials exposed to them and allow them take the lead. We also have a huge focus on integration in our centre. Our ASD classroom is closely linked with our Montessori room. We ensure to gain lots of opportunities to allow children in ASD class to join in on activities, play-time, birthday parties etc. We ensure children are integrated with the mainstream class as much as possible.
Children love to come to this corner during their day in the classroom to take a break from their work, some enjoy exploring the books we have or to just have a lie down and a cuddle with a teddy.
Our circle time and group time is a favourite time of the day for a lot of our students and teachers. Coming all together singing songs, asking questions, observing the weather outside, the day of the week and lots of other fun activities the children enjoy. We always have a lot of fun all together.
